If you have a penchant for horror movies, then you've probably heard of the Netflix original series, Stranger Things. It is one of the most popular shows on Netflix with millions of people streaming it on their TV's, computers or mobiles. However, what most people don't know about this show is that it was originally created by a cinematic duo called The Duffer Brothers who are also known as M. Night Shyamalan's protégés. Though they are not as well known as he used to be, the brothers successfully adapted the Stephen King novel "GRAVE Encounters" into a film in 2011 with their production company, 21 Laps Entertainment. If you are unfamiliar with the book, it has its roots in Stephen King's short story "The Mist", which was then expanded into full length novel. The filmmakers also wanted to remake the short story into a feature-length film with Steven Spielberg at the helm, but unfortunately this adaptation never got off the ground. "GRAVE Encounters" remains one of Stephen King's most popular works so it was inevitable that it would be remade. The film was so well received that it spawned a sequel in 2014 which was also adapted from Stephen King's work. The film did not have much success at the box office, so the Duffer Brothers decided to take a break. After two years, they returned with their next project which is what we are currently reviewing. The film is titled "Graveyard Shift" and it was released on Netflix on October 19th, 2018. It is directed by Creighton Rothenberger who worked on the original short story as well as its 2012 adaptation, while also handling some of the screenplay for both films. The Duffer Brothers were not involved in the screenplay but they supervised production aspects of the film. The film stars Milesteedle McCarty who is best known for his work on Netflix's popular series "Berserk" and the Netflix original film "Jaws of Satan". However, he is also notable for being the lead singer of the metal band Crosses. The film also features Emma Bell who you may recognize from "Avengers: Infinity War" or "Supernatural". She has had some roles in other films like "Wish Upon", but this is her first theatrical release. Siam Adjei plays Amanda, a young girl who takes care of her younger brother while her mother goes on a vacation with her boyfriend. When Amanda comes to the graveyard shift at the cemetery, she witnesses a mysterious figure digging up a tombstone. She calls her brother, Jared (McLean) and they decide to go check it out. Soon after, Jared is attacked by the same figure and he is forced to use magic in order to survive. Amanda decides that she has to find this man and try to save her brother from him, but trouble hits as she unwittingly unleashes a supernatural creature from beyond into our world. As we mentioned above, this is an original and not based on any Stephen King source material so we will provide a comparison between the 2014 film and it 2014 film.
